Mission, Vision, Values
Welcome to the website of the Department of Biosystems Engineering (LEB) of the “Luiz de Queiroz” School of Agriculture, University of São Paulo. This site provides information regarding our department including curriculum, student activities, career, faculty, research programs, and our facilities.
Biosystems Engineering is the application of science, mathematics, and engineering to agriculture, food systems, natural resources, environment and related biological systems.
The Department has special emphasis on environmental protection with a biological interface of plants, animals, and soils leading to the better understanding of environment, machinery, mechanisms, processes, and structures. Departmental emphases include: Bio-Based Processing and Production Systems Biomass and Renewable Energy, Precision and Information Agriculture and Biosystems Management, Agricultural Safety, Environmental Stewardship, Land and Water Resources, Infrastructure and Facilities for Living Systems, Indoor Environmental Control and Agro-Environmental Physycs.
Our professors have research projects in many areas of agricultural engineering, including: hydraulics, surveying and geoprocessing, machinery, rural building and agro-environmental physics and are responsible for offering courses to undergraduate students in the Agronomic Engineering, Forestry Engineering, Environmental Management, Biological Sciences careers, with focuses and projects related to the Hydraulics, Hydrology, Drainage, Irrigation, Mechanization and Agricultural Machinery, Surveying, Remote Sensing and Photointerpretation, Rural Building, Animal Behavior, Agro-Environmental Physycs and Meteorology.
The Department has been developing significant activities in applied researches using financial resources provided by funding agencies (FAPESP, EMBRAPA, CNPq, CAPES, FINEP) and agreements with private and public companies and also USP/ESALQ and FEALQ funds. The researches results are divulged through reports, article and communications in congresses and papers published in national and international journals and, in many cases, are the sources for generating new methodologies and techniques.
The LEB extension is concentrated in courses for farmers and provide services to private and public irrigation and mechanization companies. Different areas of the LEB work alongside graduate students to diagnose problems in the field. With this procedure, there is an extension and learning process simultaneously. At the graduation level LEB offers the Agricultural Engineering Systems Program (Master and Doctor of Science).
The Mission of LEB is to develop and disseminate advanced knowledge, offer quality education in Biosystems Engineering, to train professionals capable of working in various sectors of society, entrepreneurial and sustainable way.
Consolidate itself as a Department is known nationally and internationally for the quality of their research, excellence in teaching and service to the community.
Academic excellence, Valuing People, Ethic, Transparency, Socio-environmental responsibility, Respect for heritage.
